Dealing with Whiplash Injury and pain relief

Whiplash injury is a neck injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. Whiplash most often occurs during a rear-end auto accident, but the injury can also result from a sports accident, physical abuse or other trauma as simple as tripping up!

Common signs and symptoms of whiplash include neck pain, stiffness and headaches. Most people with whiplash recover within a few months after a course of pain medication, exercise and other treatments. Some people experience chronic neck pain and other ongoing complications.

Whiplash may be called a neck sprain or strain, but these terms also include other types of neck injuries.

Whiplash Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of whiplash usually develop within 24 hours of the injury and may include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Worsening of pain with neck movement
  • Loss of range of motion in the neck
  • Headaches, most often starting at the base of the skull
  • Tenderness or pain in shoulder, upper back or arms
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms
  • Fatigue/tiredness
  • Dizziness and Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Depression

Common Whiplash Causes

Whiplash typically occurs when a person’s head is forcefully and quickly thrown backward and then forward. This motion can injure bones in the spine, disks between the bones, ligaments, muscles, nerves and other tissues of the neck.

This type of injury may result from:

  • Auto accidents. Rear-end collisions are the most common cause of whiplash.
  • Physical abuse or assault. Whiplash may also result from incidents of being punched or shaken. Whiplash is one of the injuries sustained in shaken baby syndrome.
  • Contact sports. Football tackles and other sports-related collisions can sometimes cause whiplash injuries.
  • Falls (especially from horses and bikes)
  • Slips or trips

Many people mistakenly assume that whiplash can only occur if the head or body is struck with a lot of force or at high speed. This is not true. Being pushed in the back or tripping on the pavement could just as easily cause whiplash as being involved in a rear-end shunt in your car.

SCENAR Therapy and Whiplash

Neck and shoulder pain are common issues that respond well to SCENAR treatment. We have noticed a specific pattern of asymmetries that are associated with whiplash injury. The asymmetries appear at the base of the back of the neck in the area where a necklace typically lays. In 100% of the cases where this pattern appears, when we have asked if the client has ever experienced an injury to the neck (such as a car accident, falling off a horse, or taking an unexpected fall), they share some event where whiplash likely occurred. More often than not, it was never specifically treated.

Most people don’t realise that a whiplash injury can affect more than just the neck and the effects can be long lasting, many incidents happening as far back as 20 years previously.

SCENAR Therapy, as with other back issues, is excellent at dealing with whiplash injuries. The longer the whiplash injury is left untreated the more likely other areas of the back will be effected as the body tries to compensate. We are treating Whiplash clients in the following areas; Chichester, Bognor Regis, Lavant, West Wittering, East Wittering, Birdham, Itchenor, Bosham, Pagham, Westbourne, Emsworth, Havant, Goodwood, Portsmouth, Petersfield and all surrounding areas.
